This photograph shows a group of soldiers looking at an abandoned porcelain doll. The shoulder marks on several of their uniforms show them to be members of the Royal Field Artillery. The HD symbol painted on two of their helmets shows they belonged to the 51st Highland Division.

A doll like this would have belonged to a fairly well-off child as they were expensive. Until about 1850, dolls had imitated grown women. The French began making child-like dolls from 1850, and especially from the 1860's to the 1880's.
